With the Ontario Archaeology Society - Huronia Chapter

Downtown Branch
Gathering PlaceJoin us for an evening as speaker Susan Dermarkar who will be discussing the archaeology of the Baumann Site, a 15th century Wendat Village in Oro-Medonte.
About the Presentation:
The Baumann Site is a 15th century settlement in Oro-Medonte. It was excavated several decades ago and is still the subject of specialist research, especially the pottery.
The Baumann Village, located northwest of Warminster, is a small 15th century Wendat village site characterized by a large proportion of distinctive Lalonde High Collar pottery. Since final analysis of the material remains of the village is in its preliminary stages, Susan Demarkar will be presenting a general overview of the site and its relative place within the greater Wendat occupation of Southern Ontario, relying heavily on the work of Dr. Marianne Stopp. She will introduce various aspects of the settlement pattern, lithics and bone artifacts recovered over several years of excavation led by Dr. Stopp and Dr. Dean Knight. A more in-depth description of the ceramics will round out the presentation.
About the Presenter:
Susan Dermarkar is currently a Research Associate at Trent University’s TUARC and the University of Toronto’s Archaeological Resource Centres. She completed her PhD in Iroquoian ceramics and social network analysis at U of T in 2019. Her 1985 Master’s degree from Trent University in Mayan Archaeology investigated two Postclassic Colonial era residential platforms at Tipu, Belize. She received her B.A. in Iroquoian Archaeology from Wilfrid Laurier University under Dean Knight, and has been involved in both academic and CRM field research in Ontario, British Columbia, Belize, and Greece since her first dig at the Seed-Barker site in 1977.
