Join us for a fascinating talk about recent archaeological work in Vietnam and how the results have potential applications for Ontario sites
From 2023 to 2025, Trent University surveyed and excavated Northern Vietnam’s 10th century imperial capital of Hoa L?, situated in current day Ninh Binh. The study focused on gathering and synthesizing
available data on the imperial capital and determining which areas of the city were poorly understood. To achieve this, a rigorous coding method was applied, differentiating the areas of the city and
determining which spaces needed focus. Residential spaces in the outermost regions of Hoa Lu were found lacking, which led to two excavations beside the Chùa Bà Ngô Temple. The excavations were
done in rice paddy fields, applying excavation methods suitable for wetland environments.
This presentation will highlight the basics of the coding method used to evaluate Hoa L?’s urban landscape, the results of the excavations, and open a discussion on the methods and potential of wetland archaeology in Ontario. Wetland environments can produce unique cultural contexts; the challenge remains how to access and excavate these environments in such a way that it maintains and produces valuable contexts that can be analyzed and studied.
