Downtown Branch

Gathering Place

Unleash your creativity and learn how you can use art to change the world.

In this workshop, led by Shelly-Ann Skinner (They/She), Naesiah Shannon (She/Her), and Jaden Skinner (he/him), participants will engage in discussions about the power of art in activism, historical examples of art as a catalyst for change, and the role of artists as activists. Participants will learn about different art forms and techniques that can be used in their activism. The workshop aims to explore the intersection of art and activism, providing participants with a platform to express their ideas, emotions, and perspectives on various social and political topics. Participants are encouraged to bring their artistic pieces to the workshop, to share with the participants.

UPlift Black is Black-led not-for-profit social service agency working to UPlift the complete wellbeing of Black people who live in Canada. Our programming is centred around the socioeconomic development of the Black community, our purpose is to UPlift the lives and visibility of Black individuals, families, business owners, artists and organizations through mentorship, support and community engagement. Share. Support. Show UP.

This Speaker Series was proposed by Barrie Public Library's Leaders & Innovative Teens (BPL LIT) through the Youth United Grant. United Way Simcoe Muskoka’s Youth United is an entirely youth-driven program for youth ages 15-30 that provides one-time micro-grants to help support youth-led projects in the County of Simcoe, the District of Muskoka or the Town of the Blue Mountains.

Youth United is funded in part by Canada Service Corps, a national movement that empowers youth aged 15–30 to gain experience and build important skills while giving back to their community. Learn more at Canada.ca/CanadaServiceCorps.
