When it comes to blended families, a common question is often how do I provide for my new spouse while still preserving my assets for my children from my previous relationship? Tax law provides benefits when transferring assets to spouses which are not available for transfers of assets to children. As a result the tax consequences of estate planning for blended families will often inform estate planning decisions. This presentation will demonstrate the importance of good estate and tax planning for blended families. We will explore the interplay between estate, tax and family law as well as options for balancing the goals of support to a surviving spouse and preservation of assets for children from previous relationships.
