Electric cars took a back seat as gas vehicles and road infrastructure improved. This has been changing over the last decade with huge public and private investment in electric vehicle development, driven by increasing fuel costs and government mandates around the world to curb greenhouse emissions. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) built today are more efficient then their 1890 ancestors and have finally become a practical alternative to gas and diesel vehicles. This presentation strives to inform the consumer considering the switch to electric about the practical side of EV ownership; buying, charging, and maintaining your EV to achieve the benefits of making an EV or PHEV your next car purchase.
David VanAlsyne began a policing career in 1977 in Toronto, Ontario and spent his career in traffic enforcement. He performed duties that included accident investigation, radar and RIDE enforcement and as a breathalyzer technician for a number of years he was involved in many impaired investigations. After retiring from the Toronto Police Service he joined a bus company that provided school bus, transit and special needs transportation and became a driver trainer where his focus remained on transportation safety. Now fully retired and currently the owner of an electric vehicle, he is deeply concerned with the environmental impacts of transportation and is a strong supporter of electric vehicles and is the current lead of the Barrie-Orillia Chapter of the Electric Vehicle Society, an advocacy group working on behalf of electric vehicle owners.
